Dump and Pass....? (fstab)

What do I need to do with dump and pass...?

Bodhi zazen:-

Dump is a somewhat outdated method of backup.
pass = check at boot

pass number

Used by the fsck command to determine the order in which file system checks are done. The root file system should be specified with a pass number of 1, to be checked first, and other file systems should have larger numbers. (A file system with a pass number of zero is ignored by the fsck command.)

File systems within a drive should be assigned different pass numbers, but file systems on different drives can be checked on the same pass, to utilize possible parallelism available in the hardware. If pass number is not present, fsck checks each such file system sequentially after all eligible file systems with pass numbers have been checked

In general you do not need to modify these numbers.

Ubuntu helps Linux? Bullshit ??

see this :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsjMbWXIcoA

Antongarou:-

Define "help"?I know I'm new to Linux and picked up Ubuntu as the most user friendly of the lot. I've been preaching it to my friends since. So maybe canonical aren't the biggest contributors codewise, but help people get hooked onto Linux systems?

Old man hook

Most user friendly of the lot? What did you try before Ubuntu? About Canonical-What's their end game maybe to become the next Apple!

How many of your friends have you hooked on Ubuntu? It's not about getting people hooked, If you always take from but not give back you end up Broke and thats what some wants Linux and free software to be. Just think about it!!

Chaitanya

But I thought Canonical does contribute code to kernel as well. And even they do not contribute as much code to kernel as some others, they still are contributing spreading Linux. Most of the first timers to Linux usually go the Ubuntu way and quite correctly so. It is one of the most used Linux distribution. And I find it appealing and absolutely useful with no cost bearing. And I doubt Canonical will go Apple way. The philosophy for both the companies tend to be very different.

craigevil:-

While I am not a big fan of Ubuntu they have done a lot to bring Linux to the unwashed masses. Including the several hardware vendors that sell system with Ubuntu preinstalled.

Dixie dancer:-

Not very long ago I was saying that Ubuntu was good for the larger Linux community because it "tamed wild Debian" and granted access to the awesomeness of Debian Linux for us ordinary non-geeky end-users.

But since I started with Ubuntu, every release seems to just get buggier and buggier in their quest to be "all things to all users" (admittedly a worthy goal, just perhaps not achievable yet). It's plagued with experimental - even beta - software that is troublesome for even experienced Linux users. Using newbies as unwitting beta-testers unawares is just unforgivable. And I think part of the reason is that Canonical insists on a rigid release schedule, so stuff kinda gets rushed to release ready or not.

Ubuntu is probably okay for newbies if they stay "one release behind" the most current one, since it takes several months of updates and stuff to make a release truly stable enough for ordinary desktop use by ordinary computer users. The only other li'l piece of advice I would have for Ubuntu users would be to set your Update Manager to accept only security updates! Ignore the "recommended" updates. There's a zillion "b0rked after update" threads in the Ubuntu Forums (here and at their own site) that testify to the truth of my words.

Enable window restore feature in Nautilus

suppose an Ubuntu or Linux user is using GNOME and he/she has opened too many folders , suddenly he/she has to shutdown/ switch off machine due to power failure or some other unexpected reasons , now when he/she reboots the machine he/she can't remember the folders he/she had opened earlier so there should be a window restore feature for
nautilus in Ubuntu or Linux distros in general

Ubuntu or Linux distros should implement the same window restore feature in nautilus similar to the one existing in Mozilla firefox

Solution:-
There is a setting in "gconf-editor" to tell gnome to save your windows on logout, and re-open them on the next login. Look under "/apps/gnome-session/options" for "auto_save_session"

How to setup SAR in ubuntu 10.04

SAR (collect and report statistics over time)

zodiac@gml-admin:~$ sar

The program 'sar' can be found in the following packages:
* sysstat
* atsar

sudo apt-get install sysstat

sar
Cannot open /var/log/sysstat/sa01: No such file or directory
Please check if data collecting is enabled in /etc/default/sysstat

sudo gedit /etc/default/sysstat

change the line ENABLED="false" to ENABLED="true"

now you can use sar tool

SAR features:-

* displays the same information as procinfo, vmstat and iostat
* can report historical as well as current data
* without options sar command reports cpu utilization at 10 minute intrevals for the day since midnight

* Historic data collection is made possible by sal script, which is a part of sar (or sysstat package) and must be setup
to run from cron at periodic intrevals. sar stores the data it collects in /var/log/sa in binary format

* Todays Disk Activity summary:-

sar -d

* Network interface statistics:-

sar -n DEV

* To get all available information :-
