GNOME’s services-admin tool lets you turn services on or off as well as specify runlevels
and the actions to take. It provides a GUI on GNOME, usually accessible by choosing System
| Administration | Services. In the Services Settings window every service displays a check box that, when checked, will cause the service to start at boot time; those unchecked will not run. To turn on a service, scroll to its entry and click the check box next to it to add a check mark. To turn off a service, click its check box to remove the check mark.
NB : tested on ubuntu 8.04
