Hello, when starting ubuntu edgy eft 6.10 i get this error before gnome loads,"User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored, preventing default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users." What exactly do i need to do? ... and how? Thanks in advance,
aysiu
Boot into recovery mode.
Type Code:
chown -R mitchell:mitchell /home/mitchell
chmod 644 /home/mitchell/.dmrc
reboot
mitchel7man
i followed your advice, but upon boot i still get the error?, any ideas what may have went wrong or what to do?
aysiu
Well, the original error says it has to be not only 644 permissions but also owned by the user.
Reboot into recovery mode and try:
Code:
chown -R mitchell:mitchell /home/mitchell
reboot
mitchel7man
this is wierd, i boot the recovery mode, type root password and execute the commands, to which i do not get any feedback (good or bad).....and then i boot recovery to gnome and execute the commands in terminal (sudo chown -R mitchellj:mitchellj /home/mitchellj and chmod 644 /home/mitchellj/.dmrc) both of which execute with no feedback negative or positive, just another file line or whatever its called the thing ending in $: where you type the command...... i restart and i still get the error?, am i doing it wrong or whats up?>
aysiu
If there's no feedback, negative or positive, it means the command executed successfully. I'm not sure what might be wrong.

Hello, the commands you game me run fine, but i still get the error, from what i understand up to this point, i have changed the owner of home to me, and chaned the mode of .dmrc to 644, but is there something else i have to do to make .dmrc not be ignored? Thanks very much,
michalxo
Code: chmod 700 ~/
mitchell7man
