How you terminate a window manager depends on which window manager you are running and how it is configured. If X stops responding, switch to a virtual terminal, log in from another terminal or a remote system, or use ssh to access the system. Then kill the process running X. You can also press CONTROL-ALT-BACKSPACE to quit the X server. This method may not shut down the X session cleanly; use it only as a last resort.
tested on: ubuntu 8.04
